Spot tiger, bison and wild boar at the Jaldapara sanctuary. Spend your nights at a lodge on the edge of the sanctuary, lulled by the sound of the jungle and ride an elephant through the thick forest in search of the one horned rhino. Drive up for the day to the nearby buxa tiger reserve spread over a generous 116 km, home to several of the camera worthy carnivores. And while you are there see the ruins of the historic Buxa fort within the reserve.
An overnight train will get you to Malda, now known for its mango orchards and fine silk, but once the capital of the kingdom of Gaur. With the town as a base explore the Mughal heritage of the region in the ruined cities of Gaur and Panua. Take in the monuments mosques, tombs, gates and palaces, some of which date as far back as the 15th century. Of particular note is the Adina mosque in Pandua a fine example of Pathan architecture and the Dakhil Darwaza at Gaur.
